Studying abroad is a unique experience for many students to pursue their education overseas. It is a great opportunity for students to gain quality education, experience a new culture, and become more independent.  

To most students, it is very common that most students have many questions in mind related to studying and living in Singapore. Here are a few commonly asked questions.   

Can I apply to study in Singapore without IELTS or TOEFL?  

There are the foundation programs and preparatory courses in Singapore which are designed to fill the gap between the current level of qualification and knowledge needed for further studies. If you do not have IELTS or TOEFL, this should not stop you from going to study in Singapore. Depending on the universities or the courses you are applying to, there are different requirements. Some universities have their own English test for students without IELTS or TOEFL. Therefore, it is a good idea for students to consult with the education agent such as WEduAbroad being applying.   

What are the entry requirements for studying in Singapore?

Do I need a visa to study in Singapore? If I do, what type of visa do I need? 

Yes, you do need a visa to study in Singapore. International students are required to hold the Student’s Pass from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore. It is very common that students might be concerning about the complicated process and requirement in applying for a visa. As an international student study in Singapore holding the Student’s Pass, am I allowed to work during my studies?  

International students are allowed to work part-time of 16 hours maximum legally only if they are the full-time registered students of the approved institutions listed on the Ministry of Man Power in Singapore and hold the legal Student’s Pass. Therefore, if you intend to work, it is always a good idea to carefully consult with education agents and the school to ensure you are not going over any law.  

Is there financial assistance available?  

Yes, there are. Each year, there is a scholarship provided by each university and also a scholarship provided by a third party such as a business and other foundations.   

Do I need to go through a medical checkup and purchase insurance? 

Depending on the period of your study and the announcement from the ICA, Student’s Pass applicants aged 15 or older may be required to go through a medical checkup. For health insurance, students are usually required to purchase and pay by the ICA on the type of insurance based on your program.  

What is the language used in Singapore?  

The official languages of Singapore are English, Chinese, Tamil, and Malay. Generally speaking, English is the most widely used language with all the instruction and the sign around the country written and announced in English and other additional languages.
